Craigvinean

Craigviean Forest lies above the Hermitage and is just off the A9 north of Dunkeld. It is one of Scotland's oldest managed forests, created from larch seed brought from the Alps for the Second Duke of Atholl.

This was part of the great expansion of forestry in the eighteenth century, centred on Perthshire. Many innovative techniques were employed, including scattering seed by cannon onto the dramatic crags of Craig a Barns just across the River Tay.

Craigvinean has been popular since the time of the Victorians, who delighted in forest paths leading to follies and dramatic viewpoints.

Like Eric says, fantastically scenic, and a beautiful forest, would be great to have some dedicated mtb singletrack routes though, the terrain is begging for it!

Great mature trees and surroundings. But rather boring cycling and still waiting for the development of appropriate mountain biking routes and facilities.
